Tip card: Question of the Week: Stay Put or Downsize?

Stay put or downsize: which did you choose, and what surprised you?

It’s one of the biggest decisions of the good years, and there’s no single right answer.

  • Most of us want to stay. AARP’s 2024 Home and Community Preferences survey found that 75% of adults 50 and over want to live in their current home for as long as possible. (AARP)
  • Staying often means small changes. Grab bars, better lighting and a first-floor bedroom can make a home easier to live in. Your local Area Agency on Aging, found through the Eldercare Locator, can point you to home-repair and modification help.
  • Downsizing has its fans. A smaller place can mean less cleaning, lower bills and more free weekends.

My answer: I’m a stay-put fellow, for now. We’ve made a list of small changes that make the house easier, and I’ve promised to clean out the garage before I decide anything bigger. Ask me again after that.

Your turn. Did you stay or go? What surprised you, good or bad? What would you tell your younger self about it?

Answer in the comments on our Facebook post, or email support@truecourseliving.com with "Question of the Week" in the subject line. The best answers will appear in a "Your Peers Answered" roundup on November 1, first names only and only with your permission.

Share your experience, not advice. We will never message you first or ask for money. For your own situation, talk with a trusted advisor.
