Tip card: Three Easy Fall Day Trips Close to Home

If I could pick one season for getting out of the house, it would be fall. The summer crowds are gone, the air is cooler, and the trees are putting on their best show. You don’t need a plane ticket or a packed suitcase. Some of the best outings are an hour or two from home.

1. Take a scenic drive to a state park

State parks are some of the best bargains around. Many have paved overlooks, short level trails and picnic tables right by the parking lot.

  • Look up parks within a two-hour drive and check their websites for accessible trails and restrooms.
  • Pack a thermos, a sandwich and a light jacket.
  • Take the long way there and the scenic way back.

Many states offer discounted or free park passes for older residents or veterans. It’s worth asking.

2. Find a small-town festival or market

Fall is festival season. Harvest fairs, apple and pumpkin festivals, craft shows and farmers markets pop up nearly every weekend. Small towns put on a good show: local food, music, and folks happy to chat.

Check your local newspaper, visitor center or the town’s website for dates. Arrive early for easy parking and smaller crowds.

3. Visit a museum on a free day

Many museums offer free or discounted admission on certain days, and weekday mornings are wonderfully quiet. Art museums, history museums, botanical gardens and historic homes all make for a relaxed few hours. Most have benches, elevators and a café.

Try this today

  1. Pick one outing from this list for the next two weeks.
  2. Invite a friend or neighbor to come along.
  3. Put the date on the calendar today, so it actually happens.

Make the day easy

  • Plan a rest stop every hour or so, and stretch your legs.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers.
  • Bring water, your medicines and a charged phone.
  • Aim to be home before dark.

Before a longer outing, the free Travel Packing List is handy to have.
